This Tech Tip is a follow on from parts 1 and 2 of previous titles ‘Connect Via Modbus with Red Lion and ABB’, and ‘Connect via Modbus – Part 2’. We will be looking at creating a sample program to extract information from your ABB drive to your Red Lion device, that will include looking at the actual value references from your main drive such as frequency, motor speed, torque and current.
Red Lion devices are used in a wide variety of communications set ups and it’s important to make sure your network is working at maximum efficiency. Use these tips to ensure the stable functionality of Ethernet on your Red Lion device.
The most common situation is the monitoring of “standstill” condition which can be achieve by a variety of methods. This is often accomplished by monitoring of a rotating part or monitoring the back EMF (Electro Magnetic Force) from the motor. Once a safe state or “zero speed” is confirmed by revolution frequency or low millivolt back EMF, the open signal may be triggered to unlock the gate to permit operator entry. If the stoppage time of hazardous motion is consistent, a timer is an alternative to monitoring the machine motion.
